About The Department

The department of History, Vidyasagar College currently has five faculty members, four substantive post teachers and one SACT. The department offers three year and four year undergraduate courses. Current student strength is about 200 including CBCS and CCF courses.

History of Department

The department of History was one of the earliest departments of the College. It was set up along with the establishment of the College in 1872. Till 1981 the department admitted only male students. In 1982 along with some other social sciences departments, the department of History started admitting female students. Some eminent teachers of the department were Sir Jadunath Sarkar, NarahariKabiraj, RanajitGuha, Sailendranath Sen, Ramakanta Chakraborty and Sumit Sarkar among many others.

Departmental Library

The departmental library was set up in 2008. Currently the library has about 100 text and reference books borrowed from the central library of the college as well as about 30 complimentary copies of text books and reference books donated by former and present teachers of the department. Books are issued to students only for use inside the campus. We don’t provide home lending fecility.
