Vidyasagar College, first and truly secular college in the Presidency of Bengal was a pioneering indigenous enterprise for the cause of education in British India. |

The institution founded by Iswarchandra Vidyasagar was unique in the sense that management, funding and teaching were done by Indian and Indians only. |

The eminence of the existing official and religious institutions were challenged by the Metropolitan Institute, the first affiliated private college set up by Indians under the guidance of Vidyasagar. |

The first Indian Private college founded on January 01, 1872 by Pandit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, held its own place of education. |

In 1874, Registrar of Calcutta University remarked, “The Pundit (Iswarchandra Vidyasagar) has done wonders”. |

On June 08, 1886, Vidyasagar’s path-breaking efforts in the field of education was succinctly summed by Ries and Rayyet, “The Metropolitan College of Pundit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar is scarcely less sought after than the Presidency College or the General Assembly’s Institution….it’s rate of tuition fees are low, while meritorious students are also taken free, and even allowed stipends for their maintenance. The other native (Indian) colleges followed generally the example of Metropolitan Institute…..” |

In 1922 the evening section with facilities to study the Commerce courses started. |

In 1931, the morning section, the Women’s Department of the College was opened. |

In 1960, the Morning and the evening session became independent colleges came to be known as Vidyasagar College for Women and Vidyasagar Evening College. |

The
centenary of the foundation of the college was inaugurated
by Honourable Chief Justice of India, Justice Sankar
Prasad Mitra on December 29, 1972. |

year 1997 marked the 125th Foundation Anniversary of
the college. On this occasion, a commemorative postal
stamp was released by the Government of India. |
